Advice For Mending A Chipped Or Cracked Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Most people apply epoxy garage floor paint because they want to be sure that their concrete garage floor will be protected. It looks really nice & makes you happy to be in your garage. I bet you never thought garage flooring could brighten your day so much But then it happens. A tool falls insert slow motion footage slams into the epoxy garage floor coating leaving a dent & sending a chip of epoxy flying. Thankfully repairing cracks & chips on epoxy garage floors isn’t very difficult.

Do This Before Repairing An Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

If you installed your own epoxy you’ll probably remember making sure the floor was extremely clean & this is your first step yet again. You have to be completely sure that the scar as well as the area surrounding it clear of all oil grease & dirt even if you’ve only ever parked cars in there. Even if they’re brand new cars have this way of leaving their mark on floors. Epoxy though is made to resist chemicals so it’s pretty easy to clean. There are lots of cleaners out there that you can get that are designed to be used on painted flooring though dish soap does the job well too & will probably be better for your hands. Do not limit the cleaning to the area that is damaged. Be sure to clean an area that is fairly large around the damaged spot.

Removing The Offending Section

Unfortunately you can’t just fill the affected spot or it would stick out like a sore thumb. Epoxy as with pretty much any paint will kind of fade & change color as time passes although it’s generally not noticeable unless you add new paint with which to compare. When repairing a ding on a car this can be addressed using a clay bar or a scratch removal compound to mix the old & new paint together. Epoxy is made to resist that kind of tampering though. So to make sure the new blends with the old you will need to remove a square of paint surrounding the area that is affected to make the newly painted area big enough so as to not be obvious. A hobby knife or box cutter is very useful for this. Try to cut about two inches on every side of the scar bigger if you are fixing an area that is very obvious such as the middle of the garage floor. After the cut has been made take a blow dryer & heat the area that is to be removed until the epoxy begins to soften then use a paint scraper to remove the paint.

Fixing The Problem While Being Sure Not To Die

Okay now that there is bare area you can start to repair your epoxy garage floor coating. Make sure to use any directions that came with the epoxy kit but use common sense as well acknowledging that you are working on a much smaller area than what those directions were written for. Feather the edges of the old & new paint so that the colors blend at least a little bit. Make sure too that you have good ventilation in your garage whenever you are working with epoxy garage floor coating. Epoxy fumes are not good for human lungs.

Keeping It From Happening Again

Next time you’re working in your garage use a garage floor mat Anything that happens once is likely to happen again. Any garage floor covering will prevent this from happening & small mats for where you are working aren’t very expensive. The next time you drop a tool you’ll be very glad that you got some extra protection. Epoxy garage floor coatings look great & are very durable but they are definitely not indestructible.
