I don”t have to turn on the news to see how bad the economy is; I just need to check my wallet. There isn”t an area my family”s life that hasn”t been scrutinized & squeezed for every cent we can save. One the first places most people look to save money is the grocery store. I normally swear by weekly menu & grocery list but these are different times. Maybe what I want to cook isn”t what I ought to cook. Maybe I should let the sales do the talking.
When you walk into the grocery store you”ll notice remarkable thing. You can”t turn down any aisle without walking into “Buy-One-Get-One-Free” sign “Price Cut” sign or “Reduced Items” sign. I started to think what if I only chose items on sale? Could I make dinner with just those ingredients?
It may take some time before you feel comfortable restricting your meals so dramatically. But you know the kinds foods you & your family like. Also be aware that your best sale days are most likely on the weekend. I”ve been grocery store that didn”t have any sales on Thursday but they were practically giving the store away on Friday.
You will need little strategy when you walk into the grocery store. Plan to shop the exterior aisles the store first as that”s where most stores display the “main ingredients”; vegetables meat fish poultry cheese & dairy. Fill your cart first with these items only the ones you find on sale & you will see your meals start to develop. Don”t worry… you”ll find plenty specials all these sections any grocery store.
Now that you”ve gotten your “basic ingredients” it”s time to buzz through the inner aisles. Quickly scan all the sale flags down the aisles decide if your family will eat & grab if sounds good. Don”t spend lot time figuring out what to cook; when you put your items the cart you”ll start to see meals come together before your very eyes. And don”t forget you”ll have some pantry items at home too.
What about coupons? Clipping coupons can be very useful tool saving money when used properly. I can”t see how buying something just because there is coupon saves you money if ends up just taking up space your pantry never to be used. If you use use the coupon. Now if you don”t care much about what dish soap bath soap laundry detergent or paper towels you use then coupons are great way to save money. If you buy brand soap because you can save few cents & you use then that”s smart shopping.
Now you”re home & the challenge really begins. Start by sorting your groceries into categories like protein vegetables dairy & canned goods or whatever makes sense to you. Look your cupboards to see if you have any rice potatoes or pasta too. Now you can see menu start to develop. If you review each pile you should be able to pull an item out & mix & match until you”re looking at what appears to be meal See… you are creative after all
Shopping several times month using “sales items only” strategy will begin to pay very quickly. Watch your grocery bill shrink while you create unique menus that have your family asking why you never thought this meal before. You may even find out that you can really cook I challenge you to give this strategy chance & see if you can”t trim your grocery budget & cook creatively the process.
