This is still a popular method used in most of the Middle East & Africa. It is considered healthier than using a toothbrush. The chemicals in the twigs contain whitening properties.

How Germs Changed Everything

This kind of behavior generally led to a very dirty mouth. However when microscopes were invented so were germs. Or rather germs were discovered. This is when the rise in European culture toward anti septic & hygienic things grew. People were so afraid of germs that they went a bit crazy. The good thing that came out of this though was that they kept their mouths cleaner.

Nylon was first invented in the early’30s. Of course people were trying to be more hygienic & so they made toothbrushes from nylon. However they were only effective for applying teeth-whitening products. They were much to rough to use on a daily basis. It would take almost 40 years before nylon was soft enough to be used on a regular basis in the mouth. In that time other teeth-white in products became available such as unknown yeah & baking soda. With all of these things the teeth-whitening industry began to blossom. In the late’30s nylon was first invented. In the past toothbrushes were made from animal hair & were no longer used ones germs were discovered. For about 40 years & no one used toothbrushes. One of the first applications for nylon was toothbrushes. However they actually were not good for your gums. In the’50s the toothbrushes we know today were finally introduced. Along with that was the desire for teeth whitening products. Some of the first affected teeth whitening products of this time used pumice baking soda & ammonia.
